Jesus Gave You A Better Covenant

TNIV Scripture for Wednesday July 9, 2008 [Hebrews 8:10-12
This is the covenant I will establish with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbors, or say to one another, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.'

The book of Hebrews was written to Christian Jews to encourage them not to abandon Christ in the midst of persecution against Christians. Because these Jews were familiar with the Old Testament, the writer of Hebrews laced the book with Old Testament quotes to make his points comparing the old covenant (promises of God) with the new covenant. The Scripture reading for today is one such Old Testament quote from Jeremiah 31 that foreshadowed this better covenant of Jesus. God promised to give you something better through His Son, Jesus. By God's grace, do not "neglect so great a salvation."
