You Worship What You Fear

TNIV Scripture for Thursday, August 7, 2008 [Psalm 34:9-14]

Fear the LORD, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

You will worship or focus on the things that you fear. For example, if you fear Satan, you can end up with a focus on Him instead of on God. That is a form of worship. The Bible teaches over and over not to fear anything but God. However, you are tempted every day to fear or focus on other things. Take those things and cast them on the Lord because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Fear of God is not the same as being afraid of God. He is not a big thumb in the sky waiting to squish you every time you make a mistake. However, He is awesome, powerful and to be revered. As you get to know God through the Word, prayer and fellowship with other believers, you can begin to know Him, fear Him properly and grow in trusting Him. Let God be your focus and watch Him bless you beyond measure. Give Him your inability to live a holy life, receive from Him His ability and watch your life overflow with His peace and spiritual abundance in the midst of your circumstances.
