Wisdom From Above [James 3]

8But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. 17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.18And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Yesterday afternoon, I said something to my husband that immediately felt wrong, it was caustic and sarcastic. As I thought about why I would say such a thing, I realized that although I had done my Bible reading that morning, something or another had distracted me and I never got around to my prayer time. Once again, I was reminded of how much I need God to keep my tongue under His control. However, I have to invite Him each day to take that control as I give it to Him. I am so grateful for Jesus who paid the penalty for my ugly words and for the power available through His Spirit to be filled with wisdom from above instead.

Wisdom From Above                    Wisdom Not From Above
pure                                                    earthly
peaceable                                            natural
gentle                                                  demonic
reasonable                                           jealous
full of mercy and good fruits                  selfish ambition
unwavering                                          disorder
without hypocrisy                                  every evil thing

We praise You that You alone are the tamer of our tongues and the source of the wisdom from above. Cause us to daily surrender our minds and tongues to you.
