God's Design for Glory and Beauty [Exodus 28]

²"You shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.

³"You shall speak to all the skillful persons whom I have endowed with the spirit of wisdom, that they make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister as priest to Me.

The entire chapter of Exodus 28 describes in detail the clothing to be fabricated and worn by Aaron and his sons as they ministered in the tabernacle as priests to God. These garments were holy or set apart for glory and beauty. The Old Testament word for glory means weighty as in valuable or more precious. You can picture a set of scales with feathers on one side and a pile of gold bars on the other. Glory would be the gold bars that would weigh down the one side of the scales far outweighing the feathers and would also be much more valuable. The word for beauty used in the text can mean ornament, honor, majesty as well as beauty. Therefore, these special clothes were made to be worn only for one purpose, for the priests to serve God in conjunction with the tabernacle. These garments symbolized the weightiness or preciousness of this service and the honor, majesty and beauty of ministering to our God.

According to the New Covenant, Jesus is now our High Priest ministering to God in the heavenly tabernacle.

Hebrews 4:14-15

¹⁴Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.¹⁵For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

However, the Bible also refers to us as priests to proclaim the excellencies of God and Jesus.

1Peter 2:9

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

As I consider what it means to be part of His royal priesthood in light of Exodus 28, I am thinking that perhaps I need to be asking God enable me to appreciate the incredible care He has taken to clothe me in Christ and to walk in the awareness that my spiritual clothing sets me apart and is there for glory and beauty in ministering to Him.

Father, we praise You for the way you carefully and beautifully clothed Your priests to be separate and to minister to You in Your tabernacle. Cause us to see and appreciate the spiritual significance of this in our lives today and to walk with Jesus, our High Priest, in the high calling You have for us in ministering to You on this earth. Enable us to be priests who proclaim Your excellencies!
