God Keeps His Promises!
TNIV Scripture for Monday, July 14, 2008 [Genesis 12:1-3]
The LORD had said to Abram, 'Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you. 'I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.'
From the fall of Adam and Eve, God had a plan to restore the human family to Himself. There are some significant people and events presented in Scripture fulfilling God's plan. In Genesis 3:15, after the fall, God promised Eve that her "seed" (a foreshadowing of Christ) would crush Satan's head in the end. Several generations later, God saved Noah's family (8 people) from the flood (Genesis 6-9) keeping Eve's seed alive for redemption through Christ. Several more generations passed until God made the promise to Abram (later called Abraham) in Genesis 12:1-2, the reading for today. God promised to make a Abram "into a great nation...and all peoples on earth will be blessed" through him. In Genesis 17, God made a covenant (promise) with Abram to fulfill His previous promise to him even though Abram was 99 years old and still had no children. Amazingly, Abram trusted God's promise to give him a child and was declared righteous by God. Then, Sarai, Abram's wife (later called Sarah), who was also very old, bore Isaac, who fathered Jacob, who fathered Judah and on down the ages until Christ was born of Mary.
Approximately 4000 years passed from the time of God's promise to Eve to birth of Christ and another 30 or so years until Satan's head was crushed through the death and resurrection of Christ. God knows how to keep His promises. In John 3:16, the apostle John explained why God did all this for Eve's family when he wrote, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. NASB John 3:16
