Contentment in Christ

TNIV Scripture for Wednesday, August 6, 2008 [Philippians 4:11-13]

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Paul was in prison when he penned his letter to the church at Philippi around 61 or 62 AD. Although, he was suffering, he wrote about joy and rejoicing (being calmly well off) in God's grace. He ended the letter with the words above in response to their inquiry concerning his needs. The verse just before Philippians 4:11-13 says, "But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity." And then, came his remarkable words about being content. Contentment does not depend on your circumstances according to Paul. Contentment comes as you lean on Christ as your source of strength with the emphasis not on "I" (you), but on "him" (Christ).

I can do all this through him (Christ) who strengthens me.
