The Lord's Chosen Instrument [Acts 9]

10Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord."11And the Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying,12and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight."13But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem;14and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name."15But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel;16for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name's sake."17So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."18And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized;19and he took food and was strengthened.

Saul's story never ceases to amaze me every time I read it. His life continues to comfort me when I remember my own background of sin and how Saul's sins did not stop God from using him and likewise, my sins do not stop God from using me! I am also so grateful that God specifically chose Saul to preach the good news of Jesus to us Gentiles so that we would be able to enter the Kingdom of God. And I am grateful to Saul, who became Paul, that he was willing to suffer so much for Christ's sake because Jesus called him as a chosen instrument of His, not only to bear His name before the Gentiles, but to suffer for His name's sake. I am encouraged that it is OK to suffer for the sake of Christ and not to let that hold me back. But Paul also expressed that there was grace, joy and peace in the midst of that suffering in his many letters throughout the New Testament. He also said that he had learned to be content in whatever circumstance God had for Him, whether it be comfortable or not. That knowledge comforts me as I pursue Christ and experience difficult people and circumstances.

We praise you that you call people to share the good news of Jesus throughout the world and for the example of Saul who became Paul. Cause us to hear your call and to keep filling with Your Spirit so that we may have the courage to be Your chosen instrument to go, share and even suffer for You Name's sake.
